FAQ

How can I stop TypoTrawler from running while I view another site?

- Just press the space bar.

Why am I getting a 404 error (page not found) when trying to view an item?

- Some overzealous firewalls block the eBay affiliate program we use, throwing a 404 error instead. Other programs also block these links... try reading this article for more details. Also, see the question below.

Do you advertise?

- Yes we do. The idea of TypoTrawler, like many websites, is to make money. Every time you click on an item, a little cookie is stored on your computer saying that it was us that linked you to eBay. If you proceed to buy the item, we get a small commission from eBay. We have no idea what you've bought or who you are, all we know is that we get a pay cheque at the end of the month! However, some virus scanners seem to think that the innocent little cookie is a 'tracking cookie' and for some reason a security risk (see question above). This is simply wrong as no personal information is being stored. We love this form of advertising as it's unobtrusive and keeps our website free of nasty pop-ups and ads, whilst earning us enough to justify running the site.

Why don't you include the country I live in?

- The eBay affiliate program is only available in a few countries. It doesn't make sense to spend the money on extra resources if you can't make that money back through advertising, so we choose to only index a few sites. Also, we'd struggle to trawl non-english language sites, since none of us know how to spell in another language anyway!

How do I search for a specific item?

- Click the 'Custom Search' button at the top of the page and enter the keyword you're interested in.

Why are some of the prices wrong?

- Due to technical restrictions we can only update our database of items a few times a day, so if someone bids on an item between an update, the price will be outdated. In other words, please only take the price we show as a rough guide!

Why do I need cookies enabled? What do you store in them?

- TypoTrawler keeps track of what items have already been displayed to you so that you never have to see the same item twice. This means that if you leave the site and come back, you wont have to sit through items you've already seen.

TypoTrawler isn't working properly!

- First, submit a bug. Secondly, make sure you've updated your web browser to the latest version. TypoTrawler is extensively tested on Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera using Windows. Some testing has been done with Safari on Windows and Firefox on Linux. If you're using a different browser/platform then please submit a bug.
